Ernie Bowling, OD

 

Ernest L. (Ernie) Bowling operates a two-office solo optometric practice in northeast Alabama. He graduated from the University of Alabama in Birmingham with a Master of Science degree in Physiological Optics in 1989 and a Doctor of Optometry Degree in 1990. After practicing in northwest Georgia for 15 years, he returned to his alma mater as an Associate Professor in Optometry where he served as Director of the Primary Care Service. He was voted “Outstanding Clinical Educator” by the UABSO students in 2008. He has also served as Clinic Director at VisionAmerica, a surgical co-management and tertiary care center in Gadsden, Alabama.

 

A prolific author with over 100 articles to his credit, Dr. Bowling is currently the Chief Optometric Editor of Optometry Times, a major optometric trade publication. Prior to this role he was Associate Clinical Editor of Review of Cornea & Contact Lenses and an author of The Corneal Atlas. He has served on the editorial boards of Optometric Management, Review of Optometry, Review of Cornea & Contact Lenses, and Optometry Today journals. He is the past editor of the Wolters Kluwer internet newsletters Managing Dry Eye, Comprehensive Optometry and Diagnostic Digest.

 

Dr. Bowling is a sought-after speaker and has presented at every major optometric meeting during his career. He is a Diplomate of the Primary Care Section of The American Academy of Optometry and a past recipient of the Georgia Optometric Association’s Bernard Kahn Memorial Award for outstanding service to the optometric profession.
